Two Muslim girls who were kind enough to take my picture. |
Friday I had the opportunity to visit the Candi Badut, one of the oldest temples in Indonesia. This is a Hindu temple that it literally 4 blocks from where I am staying and I had to go down an alley way to find it. This isn't how the temple has always worked, it was restored back to what they think it looks like, but it is a beautiful piece of Indonesian history.
I then had time to wander around the back streets and get a feel for what the neighborhood was like. This is an example of one of their local building supply stores.

All the tools you need to repair a crumpling infrastructure |
I have to say that Indonesians really like their birds. Where I would be tempted to hang a plant, Indonesians will hang 2 birds.
|
These cages can be found everywhere. |
Where do they get all these birds? Well, from the local pet market. Imagine an area of about 2-4 blocks filled with birds and fish shacks packed side by side. They had other things besides just birds and fish. I saw some cats, 1-2 puppies, a couple of monkeys, geckos, turtles, and an entire cage packed with squirrels.

I was surprise that many of the animals seemed pretty healthy |

Want to buy an owl? |
|
I don't think this is their natural color. |
|
Pet crayfish? Ok, I guess |
|
This can't be good for these little guys. |
|
I would not buy a monkey, but it's here if you want. |
|
There were also many side alleys that you could barely walk through. |
Next to the pet marked they also had a plant marked that was absolutely beautiful, it looked like a garden full of tropical plants, but it was smaller and much less crowded.
We then took the scooter to a modern import marked called the Ranch Market, that had a lot of stuff that you could commonly only get in the States or the UK. Most of it was expensive, a bot of Reeses cerial was around 10 US dollars. However, it's nice to know that if you really got a craving for it, you could get your cereal fix.

I found Dory!......awwww. |
Back on the scooter and to an ultimate Frisbee game with a bunch of the ExPats We had a pretty good turn out and were able to play a few 6 on 6 games. We won most of them and I didn't embarrass myself, so I'll consider it a success.
Then we went over to one of the teacher's house that is family friends with Mike and we had a dinner of nachos, with knock-off Indonesian Doritos called Minitos, and played some card games like Crash-up and Love Letter. They have a fun tradition in the family that when you win a game you get to write you name on the wall of their game room. The wall is covered with names of board games and names of the winners written around it.
Sleep at 9:00PM and then a full nights sleep for the first time.
We went to breakfast at Java Dancer, a very nice coffee shop and I had a Philly Cheese Steak omelet.
After the food had settled Mike took me on a bike ride up the mountain towards Batu. The ride through the tight roads and villages was a real treat and even though it was humid as could be, I had an amazing time.

The banners are in anticipation for Indonesian Independence Day. |
When we finished the ride, we were late for lunch with more friends and went to a restaurant called the Library. Mostly western food and very nicely decorated.
After the lunch we went to a local conference center / resort / hotel to get a massage. Probably one of the best massages that I have gotten.
After the massage we went back to the house, ate some pizza that Mike ordered and watched a couple of Dota Games before passing out.
